Reflections on our mixed relationship with birds as told by three types of birders.

Carol Probets – the lover No one in her family knew why, but Carol Probets has always had a thing for birds. As a child it was encouraged by a copy of What Bird is That? the only Australian bird guide at the time.

Her obsession with birds and the outdoors led her to the Blue Mountains where she works as a professional bird watcher and guide.

Jane Connors – the hater Her whole life, even whilst in the womb, Jane Connors has been chased, pecked and swooped. This undue share of terrible bird experiences has left her with a genuine fear of the feathered kind.

What’s more annoying though is that the fear can vary depending on the bird; seagulls are okay, pigeons are manageable but magpies are evil.

Jane Ulman – the recordist Jane Ulman remembers the first bird she recorded; tough conditions and a heavy reel-to-reel but she was keen.

Over the years Jane has developed a deep interest in recording birds and regularly sets out to remote regions to capture rare bird songs.

Jane is driven to document the incredible and share it with the world.
